Ormiston State School, located within the Redland City Council area, provides coeducational learning for students from the Prep Year to Year 6. The school was first opened in 1872, making it is one of the oldest primary schools in Queensland. Ormiston State School has grown from being a small country school serving the rural Ormiston district to the present day where it serves the suburb of Ormiston and surrounding urban areas. Our school has a proud history and tradition, but also a futures focus.
Ormiston State School has seen steady enrolment growth in recent time, aligning nicely with the school’s motto 'Learn as we grow'. The school has also seen improvement in recent years, driven by an explicit, simple and effective improvement agenda, grounded in the foundation areas of learning: reading and spelling (English) and number and problem solving (Mathematics). The significant growth in student enrolment has required the implementation of an enrolment management plan. In 2014, Ormiston State School became an independent public school – the first and only primary independent public school in the Redlands.
Ormiston State School maintains a focus on the 'whole child', with quality experiences and opportunities provided across the 'four pillars' of academic, cultural, sporting and community education. Our school has the services and facilities required to cater for the individual needs of every student and we are proud of our warm and caring learning environment and 'community' feel. Our active and effective P&C Association and supportive school community further enhance the sense of collaboration and partnership. In 2014, the Ormiston State School Council was established to continue to guide the vision and direction of our school.
Our skilled and dedicated teaching staff provide quality learning experiences and educational programs. Our school implements both the Australian Curriculum and the Queensland Curriculum and Reporting Framework and takes advantage of 21st century learning. Our Prep program has a balanced, inquiry based approach, with these foundations built upon in the early phase of education. A 'middle school' approach in the upper years builds on and consolidates learning. Additionally, programs in music, physical education, library, Language other than English (LOTE) (French), and instrumental music are delivered by specialist teachers. Our teacher aides provide excellent support to our teachers and for our students. Our school also offers literacy and numeracy support, special education program support, speech therapy and English as a second language support. A chaplain and a guidance officer assist in the provision of pastoral care.
Ormiston State School is a 'School wide positive behaviour support' school as we recognise the need for a safe, supportive, disciplined and engaging learning environment. Our school uses and values the 'The Ormiston Primary School' (TOPS) framework:
Teamwork - Work as a member of a team.
Ownership - Own your behaviour and learning.
Participation - Participate to the best of your ability.
Sensitivity - Be sensitive to the needs of others.
Our school continues to strive to ensure extension and enrichment opportunities are provided to challenge and support all our students. Ormiston State School seeks to pursue the best educational outcome for every student and ensure each student can achieve their full potential – as independent, knowledgeable and skilled people who are socially responsible and positively motivated.
I welcome you to our school – a great school, becoming greater – with a focus on innovation, performance and, most of all, students.
Mr Neil Randall
Principal
